Shawnee High School Reviews

I am a graduate of Shawnee and made sure I bought in the district so my 5 children could go to Possum and Shawnee as I did. I feel that Shawnee dwells way to much on the dress code than they do education. They are overly concerned if the boys are cleaned shaved and prey on them daily, walking up to them from across the hall to feel their chin to see if they can send them to shave. I feel the sports is very political and my children who played there as freshmen chose to never play again. Those same 2 children begged me to send them to another school because of their bad experiences there. I currently have a freshman and senior at this school. I am sure all schools have issues but I only know this one from my lifetime of experience.

My children graduated from Shawnee and I rate it as average or just below. Both kids were disappointed with the lack of concern or had regarding AP classes or college issues and the counselors were hardly easily accessible. Neither felt there was a true sense of understanding from administration or faculty except on rare occasions. The Chemistry taught at Shawnee is not sufficient preparation for college Chemistry. Shawnee needs new administrators who will see better how to budget and make the best of the income they receive without trying to pull the wool over the community's eyes.

I am a recent Shawnee High School alumni and am now in college (with a 4.0 GPA). My academic success is attributed to the faculty/staff at Shawnee. They not only prepared me for college, but have provided me opportunities beyond academic achievement. They have been undergoing some difficulty regarding funding because they are lacking support from the community. I am hoping that the community realizes just how much of an asset this educational institution is, and will begin to give it more of their support. Yes, I hate taxes as much as the next person, but can we not make a few sacrifices (ex. eating out) to support education? Opportunities such as advanced placement, clubs, and art/music/PE are essential in a child's educational development. Those upper-level classes and extracurriculars have availed to me more opportunities to receive scholarships and advance academically, and they need to remain in the curriculum. GO BRAVES!

My husband and I are Shawnee graduates. We moved back to the district years ago so our (6) children could attend as well. We are very impressed with the acedemics as well as sports programs offered to all kids, there is something for everyone. We are surprised at how many people who are past grads have come back to raise their kids in our district, that speaks for itself that this is a good school structure. The administration of all the schools strongly encourages parent involvement. The schools are strict and we appreciate that, our kids are there to learn and the teachers have gone above and beyond to help 2 of our kids that have had some difficulty learning in some areas. We are not wealthy and do not have high profile jobs, basically we are not important people in the community but that has NEVER been a factor here.

'I am currently a student at Shawnee High School. We have great teachers that are very knowledgeable and enjoy teaching us. We have a good sports program and positive coaches. I am so lucky that my parents chose to move to this district to live in. It is a fantastic school.

I am a graduate of shawnee and on the average it was a very good school. my parents were not made of money or was not a lawyer or doctor and i still ended up making many friends and was treated good. yes there are clicks and some favoritism, with some very stuck up kids but i think that goes at every school. i can say college was easier than some of my classes at shawnee. as in for disablities, this district will work with you on that as well. they will not let it slide and you will be taught. i'm living proof of that. i like the fact that they dont put up with any bull, it's about time schools start doing that. i can honestly say if i had to do it over again i would pick shawnee again.

Shawnee High School is a great place for students who are willing to do what it takes to learn. I have had the opportunity to work with teachers and staff members at Shawnee as well as other schools and you will find that as in life each teacher has a different way of teaching. The government has strict standards and testing that the teacher's are required to teach, but it is up to the student to retain the information that is given to them. Teachers and staff members are not babysitters. As a parent (in the district) I feel that it is my responsibility to assist my children in learning as much as they can, but I'm not going to wait until they get to high school to do it. The sports and extra-curricular areas reflect the effort level put into the program by the students.

I am a 2002 Shawnee graduate and I strongly feel that my 4 years spent at Shawnee enabled me to prepare for what would be expected of myself in college as well as having a well rounded social, academic, and athletic experience. This site should not be used for parents who have discovered how to vent online or for students to make rude acusations, but should be used in order to support the school their son or daughter is in. High school experiences are different for everyone. Do not allow a few opinions dictate whether your son or daughter attends. Check it out for yourself. I had an amazing 4 years there and I am sure the new principal will do an outstanding job.I am sure Mr. Hawk will do all he can to make Shawnee the best it can be. GO BRAVES!!!

Shawnee did not prepare me for college. Some of the teachers were ok, but they did not challenge you. The old principal was the best part of the school, and I'm sorry he's gone. The shaving rule along with many other rules were completely unneccesary. Overall, I feel that Shawnee was not a great place to learn.

Shawnee is the worst place I could've ever imagined sending my son too. Since we moved here he has had nothing but trouble. The teachers haven't taught him anything and in fact those who I have met are about as educated as a blade of grass. There sports program is laughable and so is the quality of their text books. The staff shows favortism to those who have money and/or a parent who is 'important' . Overall the school is a low-grade hell for our children.

Shawnee HS is a great place for kids who are great students or athletes. However, if your child has any additional learning needs or is not a conformist they will have problems. I do believe that the new principal has been a positive for the school, he seems to bring some much needed discipline and guidance that has been lacking in the last several years. My third child is at Shawnee now and is doing well-mostly because he 'fits' in better than the other two did. Overall, I am much happier this year with the new leadership in place.

Caring and concerned staff. Very attentive to discipline without being overbearing. Good academics. Lots of extracurricular activities with band being especially good. Reasonable support for the academically oriented, although I think they could do more. I have been very happy with the school.

Shawnee High School is not a very comfortable place for my daughter. She says that the new principal is making it uncomfortable for everyone. I dislike the fact that the new principal won't change things around for the sake of the students. I have heard many people complain about him. But other than that, the teachers are wonderful, and they treat their students with respect.

I think that Shawnee high School is wonderful place. It is also a great place to go to school. Unfortunatly the consideration for minority students is horrible. In my for years of attending they never did anything to help the minority students. The never once mentioned Black History Month except for the one year they put an article in the school paper.I hope that they will gain more knowledge about how important it is to inform students of other races.

I currently have one child at Shawnee and I have been quite impressed with the quality of the programs, the education of the teachers and the disciplined dress, behavior, and grooming codes. I believe there is good leadership at Shawnee and I have been most happy with what I have experienced thus far.
