Northridge Elementary School Reviews

I am a graduate of the Northeastern Local Schools and now my daughter is a fifth grader in Northridge Elementary School. Some of same problems exist now as they did approximately 30 years ago when I attended. The classrooms are overcrowded, the school is in need of regularly scheduled maintanence (hence the problems with the boiler two weeks ago!) and community members are always reluctant to pass levies to financially support the schools. I believe that parental involvement in this school district is high and that most parents of children that attend here are very concerned about their children's academic success. Because of the large class sizes, I believe that students will receive less personalized attention particularly if they are identified as gifted in academics or the arts. The community is very supportive of the extracurricular activities that are available for the students in this district.

I am a parent of two students one in the Middle School and one in Elementary. I believe that the difference in opinion reflected by the two previous opinions would likely be a result of perspective. Although the 'policy' was for the light to be used during the last 3-5 minutes, it was and still is often used throughout the entire period. Silent lunch was abused by lunchroom staff and the children are who suffered. There has been much improvement with this since the parents forced school officials to address the issue. It is unfortunate that this is what parents remember about their child's experiences at this school. There are many excellant and caring teachers and staff here. My children have done well academically because of this. I admit that this district is in crisis and overcrowding is a huge problem. The needed community support is lacking for the levy.

Having been a past Principal of Northridge Middle School I would like to add some information to the 'traffic light' issue posted on this site. It was my experience that the light did not get turned on until the last 3-5 minutes of the student lunch period. The students had 25-27 minutes of time where they could unwind and talk. It was usually in the last 3-5 minutes, when students were finished eating, that the noise level became so high that important directions could not be heard by the students. We felt that the traffic light was needed for the last 3-5 minutes so that the students could hear and see that their noise level was too high. Over the years, we tried several options. Letting the students get as loud as they wanted was not an option. Yelling at them to get quiet was not an option. The light seemed fair. Thanks!

I have had two children go to Northridge Elementary/Middle School, and one is ready to begin at the local High School. There are many excellant teachers who are very caring. I have been pleased with the academic standards and education they have received. Unfortunately, the administration and district officals are slow to hear parent's needs and desires. The school has a 'silent lunch' policy. It has been a topic of much debate. Most parents do not agree with this, however administration refuses to hear that and remove this policy. Academics are very important, but children need time to unwind and relax. Lunch time is the appropriate place for this. They refuse to hear the cries of the public. Board decisions have been questionable as well. Likely why they have been unable to pass a levy for a few years. Lack of trust in board is major issue here.
